Wilfred Cwikiel

I am honored to be the Superintendent-Principal of Beaver Island Community School. The Pre-K through 12^thgrade nature of this school, the quality teachers, the amazing students, the supportive parents, and the wonderful connections between the school and the community make this the “coolest” school in Michigan (if not the world!). Prior to coming to Beaver Island, I served as the middle school principal for Harbor Springs Public Schools. After I had the opportunity to serve as both the middle school principal and the Superintendent of Schools during an extended leave of absence by the superintendent, I decided to seek out a position that required both the hands-on work of a principal and the “big picture” work of a superintendent. Beaver Island Community Schools is perfect!

Prior to my career in education, I worked in natural resources management, planning, and policy. I served as the Water Resource Policy Specialist for Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council for 15 years. In that role, I also coordinated outreach and education efforts and taught classes at North Central Michigan College. As a lifelong learner, have always enjoyed education. I have bachelor and master of science degrees from University of Michigan, a master’s degree in education leadership from GVSU, and an Education Specialist (central office certification) from U-M Flint.

I love hunting, fishing, paddling (kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards), mountain biking, and hiking—so Beaver Island is a paradise for me. I have two daughters, Kate and Sadie, and am married to Gail Gruenwald. If I’m not walking Sand Bay with my amazing wife Gail, paddling Lake Michigan with my awesome daughter Kate, or casting a fly for bluegills with my incredible daughter Sadie, I’m neck deep in the muck of a bog with Minda the Wonderdog.
