Thank You to Beaver Island EMS, Fire, Police, and Road Commission!

As anyone in town could hear this afternoon, our elementary students were treated to lessons about heavy equipment and emergency services (all things with loud horns and sirens)! A huge thanks to our road commission and emergency services personnel for sharing your expertise with our students and for keeping us all safe!

Islanders Take on Black Bears this Weekend!

The Islanders host the Big Bay De Noc Black Bears this weekend. Parents and community members are welcome to come and cheer on the Islanders!. Admission to the games is free this weekend, but donations are accepted to benefit the athletic program. Soccer starts at 5:00 pm on Friday with Volleyball starting around 7:00 pm. Volleyball starts up Saturday morning at 8:30 am, with Soccer to follow. Secondary (7-12th graders) students are invited to participate in the Student Council “Fun Night” after tonight’s volleyball game. If your student attends, please pick them up no later than 10:00 pm. BICS student admission to the fun night is $5.00.

Student Council Rocks the High Wire!

The BICS Student Council spent Tuesday at Camp Daggett learning about personal challenges and group dynamics. These student leaders raised money for this adventure over the summer and did a wonderful job supporting each other in the whole group and on the individual challenge activities (that included two students working as a team on a very high wire!). We are proud of these students for working together and challenging themselves!

One “Roof” Schoolhouse—Constitution Day

In the strong tradition of BICS working collaboratively between the Elementary and Secondary schools, our 2-6th grade students visited their high school colleagues today to learn about the Constitution in honor of Constitution Day. Special Thanks to Mr. Richards, Mrs. Robert, and Mrs. Bedell for organizing and implementing this cross-grade learning experience!

Welcome New BICS Faculty and Staff Members

Crystal Myers is our new Student Success Coordinator and has already jumped into being an important part of the school and the community. Amanda McGee is serving as our Health Occupations I teacher. Brontae Lemmink, a long-time Island resident and BICS grad, is serving as a classroom aide at the high school. Megan Anderson has taken on additional teaching responsibilities and is co-teaching K-1. Special thanks to our students and parents for giving our new faculty and staff a warm welcome!

Robotics Kickoff this Saturday

This Saturday is kick-off time for the bIrobot’s 2023 season. (bIrobot is the BICS FRC Robotics Team). The challenge for this year will be revealed in a live video broadcast from FIRST HQ. After the big reveal, the team will begin work on their strategy and design for the season. It’s a great chance to learn what FIRST and FRC all about and how bIrobot applies STEM learning in the classroom into a fun, competitive game played with other schools from around the world. Our local event begins at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 7th in our Robotics Lab just off the High School commons. Come and learn how you can get involved both as a student (even if you aren’t in our Programming & Robotics class) or adult (as a team mentor). All are welcome. Learn more at https://bIrobot.org.

BI Fit

After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BI Fit is ready to reopen to give Islanders a chance to exercise in the BICS gymnasium. BI Fit is a unique community collaboration between Island residents and the Beaver Island Community School. We are happy to create this opportunity to promote health and wellness for Island residents. In addition to walking the perimeter of the gym, members can work out on various exercise equipment, including a treadmill, elliptical, exercise bike, and a rowing machine in the BI Fit Zone.

Use of the gym is limited to specific times when Nicole Olson, BI Fit Coordinator, or trained volunteers are on hand to ensure safety. Anyone using the equipment must be a member of BI Fit. Membership requirements include paying an annual $25.00 fee, signing a membership agreement, completing a member participant waiver/consent for emergency treatment form, and having a Michigan State Police background check.

BI Fit will be open starting the week of January 9 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 7-8 a.m. and on Saturdays from 9-11 a.m.. Island residents can come to walk the perimeter of the gym from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 1:40 any day of the week (make sure you sign in and out at the main office). If you are interested in joining BI Fit, stop by the BICS office and pick up a membership packet.
